Romsey - a market town which grew up around an abbey, didn't have a castle Historically associated with the myth of the cockatrice Portchester - A really major Norman castle (well worth a visit!) Charles I was imprisoned here before his execution. Accurate representation: we are historically a merchant town, though we also have a good claim to being a csatleĬarisbrooke - had to google it, but yup a pretty major castle on the Isle of Wight. Pretty uncontroversial, it's the bishopric for the region.Ĭity of Southampton - Awww yis. Temple of St Swithuns - Actually that's Winchester Cathedral, but St Swithuns is the patron saint. It did have a decent castle, though not since Cromwell tore it down. Wessex makes some sense since it was a part of Wessex (hence the duchy name), but it was already called something similar to Hampshire in the Doomsday book, so they could have just used that.īarony of Winchester (capital) - it's still the county capital today, and has been the capital of other polities in the past. I get the naming of the county after Winchester, the county town as that's a general principle applied across the board. Still, Farmland might be more appropriate. I guess this was to represent the prosperity of the area though. It's listed as Plains, which is odd since the area is fairly hilly and forested - we have two national parks. The city graphic is in a good place.right on my town. The only sillyness is that they put the 'port' bit on the South Coast of the Isle of Wight, which would be inconvenient to get to, and is sheer chalk cliffs.this does really bug me when I am playing! But the only major port at the time was Southampton, which would put the port on the little bit of water (the Solent) between the mainland and the Island, so I see why they did it. Geographically they did a good job - it's a pretty sensible shape. In the real world, that's in the county of Hampshire, and in the game it's in the county of Winchester (sometimes or more recently called Wessex? Can't tell if this has been changed or is some weird cultural effect). ![]() You might like to look up the county entry in the Crusader Kings 2/history/provinces folder, since there's place names you might not encounter unless you have played in that region and got it up to 7 holdings. ![]() I've also learned a bit about my local area by doing this, which was fun! I thought it might be fun to learn a little more about the regions of the world covered by CK2, and the map we all know and tolerate love. If you live or have lived in an area of the map, how good is CK2's representation of it?
